THE HEALING POWER OF AWARENESS
Change Your Life By Changing Yourself
The New Paradigm:
Manifestation Versus Determinism
By Jack Allis
October 2003
Ancient wisdom, from civilizations around the world, tells us that we create
our reality with our thoughts and our beliefs. This is what's known as
manifestation. It works very much like magnetism. Most of us have experienced
this, perhaps without even being aware of it. For example, when we're feeling
really good about ourselves and about life, good things just seem to happen.
And when we're feeling rotten, it's just the opposite. One of the most
vivid examples of manifestation in the field of health and healing is placebos.
There is abundant evidence to indicate that one of the primary factors
in the effectiveness of most medications is whether or not people believe
they will work.
Prior to the advent of quantum physics, about seventy-five years ago, there
was no scientific proof for the principle of manifestation. Sages and mystics
based their knowledge of it on the esoteric wisdom that had been passed
down to them over the centuries, and on their intuition, their higher awareness,
and their personal experience. When the quantum physicists began to explore
subatomic matter, they discovered a world that totally transformed the
traditional notion of reality. This new view of the world also confirmed
what the spiritual traditions had been saying for centuries.
The quantum physicists discovered that subatomic particles, which are the
foundation upon which everything in the universe is built, did not exist
as distinct physical entities, as was previously believed. Instead, they
were traces or bundles of vibrating energy moving at lighting speed. It
was impossible to measure them or observe them in the traditional manner.
Matter at this level didn't exist with certainty at definite places. It
could only be understood in terms of probabilities and interconnections.
It didn't exist as a thing, but showed certain probabilities to exist.
And these probabilities were not probabilities of things, but probabilities
of interconnections with other aspects of their environment. The physicists
also discovered that they were an integral part of this picture, and that
the behavior of these energy traces was relative to them, and the experimental
conditions they set up. This new world, then, was a dynamic web of energy
patterns, in which everything was interconnected with everything else,
and in which the human mind played a primary role in determining the nature
of what was perceived.
There was another aspect of all this the physicists agreed upon. This new
world of vibrating energy seemed to be guided by an unseen intelligence.
The very existence of organic life is proof of a unifying intelligence
of some sort. For example, the building blocks of life, starting with DNA,
then progressing up to cells, enzymes, proteins, and on up the ladder of
life, must have intelligence in order to build the structures they build
according to specific plans. If they didn't, they wouldn't know what to
build, and this growth would be random and chaotic.
In asserting that there is an intelligence in the universe, we are, of
course, entering the realm of spirituality. This is a concept we currently
cannot prove scientifically, and there is a high probability it is beyond
the scope of our reason entirely. However, this is consistent with the
definition of spirituality (at least mine). Spirituality is simply the
unknown. It's that aspect of life or the world that is outside the scope
of our reason and our five senses, but which we believe to be true on the
basis our feelings, our intuition and our higher awareness.
This new world, or paradigm, also has profound implications in the area
of health and healing. Since we create our reality with our thoughts and
beliefs, it follows that we create the reality of our physical body. The
new paradigm is one of interconnections. Our mind, which simply defined
is the thoughts and beliefs we learn as a function of our experience, is
interconnected with the biochemistry of our bodies. This is the fundamental
concept of health and healing in the new paradigm. The old paradigm was
one of separation. It separated the mind from the body, and maintained
that the body was a biochemical machine. Our thoughts and our feelings
do have a direct affect upon our biochemistry. For example, the feeling
of anxiety is the result of our perception of danger or hopelessness, whether
it actually exists, or not. And this feeling triggers accelerated levels
of hormones that affect virtually every muscle, nerve, cell and organ in
our body. Our thoughts trigger our feelings, and our feelings trigger biochemical
events.
We live in a culture in which we are conditioned to believe that the world
is a bad place that we should fear. Bad things just happen, and that's
the way it's meant to be. In this view of the world, people are also seen
as inherently bad. Like all the other animals, people are seen as governed
by base, carnal instincts, such as aggression, greed and lust. These negative
and destructive beliefs are the primary source of the chronic stress, anxiety
and unhappiness that are so prevalent today. This state of being has a
profound affect upon our biochemistry, and this is the cause of most of
the mental and physical sickness in the world. Tragically, this has become
so ingrained and habituated that most people aren't even aware of it anymore.
They simply believe that's the way it is. Life sucks.
Optimal health and happiness, then, are a function of learning how to recondition
our minds to see the world differently, and to see ourselves differently.
Life doesn't suck, and people aren't inherently evil. That's simply an
interpretation. In fact, the world is a breathtakingly magnificent and
unfathomable place, and we are a reflection of its brilliance. This was
the impression the quantum physicists had of the new world they discovered.
They were so dazzled and awed by what they saw that they believed it must
be part of some great cosmic mind. Such a miracle couldn't be an accident.
Again, this is precisely what the esoteric and spiritual traditions have
been telling us since the beginning of time.
Seeing and experiencing the splendor of the world, as well as the part
we play in this, are simply a question of learning how to tune ourselves
to a different frequency. And this means the totality of ourselves - mind,
body and spirit. It means developing our awareness, and to be more precise,
our higher awareness. Awareness, in this context, also has a very clear
and precise definition. This is not a relative or subjective term. It does
not vary from person to person. And the definition of awareness returns
us again to the fundamental concept of the new paradigm. Awareness means
connection.
Awareness is a state of mind or a state of being in which we are connected
to the world and to life. Awareness is our experience of unity or communion
with the intelligence of a living universe. And again, we have ventured
into the realm of spirituality, but this is as it must be because that
is the nature of awareness. Over millions of years of evolution, nature
and the intelligence that governs life have devised perfect blueprints
for healthy living. Everything is energy, and the energy of healthy life
forms vibrates at a certain frequency or rhythm. We call this vitality,
and it is the spark of life. Optimal health is nothing more than developing
a state of being that resonates at this frequency. It is connecting with
the rhythm and the flow of life.
There are several essential components to the blueprint for vitality. One
is knowing how to relax, and experience life with an attitude of peacefulness
and acceptance. Feelings of happiness and joy are another. Living in the
moment, and loving life, gives us tremendous power. On a mental level,
we must learn how to eliminate our internal chatter. Our mind can be a
ruthless trickster, and it is imperative to get it in proper working order.
When we are attuned to the rhythm of life, with the totality of ourselves,
mind, body and spirit, we have the ability to manifest, or to create our
destiny according to our heart's desire. Life bestows inconceivable gifts
upon those who are attuned to it.
Ideas change the world. And manifestation is the single idea that has the
power to shift the old paradigm into the new. The old paradigm was one
of determinism, in which the universe was seen as a great machine, and
people were just one of its moving parts. The new paradigm is one of manifestation,
in which the universe is seen as a great thought, and we play a primary
role in the creation of that thought.
