QUANTUM HEALTH
The Philosophical Flaws of Modern Medicine
& The New Paradigm in Health & Healing
By Jack Allis
October 2005
Established medicine is not working, and the philosophical basis upon which
it rests is fundamentally flawed. The current rates of cancer, heart disease,
depression, and alcohol and drug addiction alone are sufficient testimony
that we live in an age of epidemic physical, mental and emotional sickness.
However, a new paradigm is emerging in health and healing that is rocking
the world of established medicine. It is built upon a revolutionary philosophy
with the power to not only transform our physical health, but to transform
every other aspect of our troubled world as well.
Established medicine doesn't have a clue what causes the diseases of modern
life, or how to cure them. As with any system, the explanation for this
can be found in the philosophy upon which this system is built. The philosophy
of established medicine is based upon two fundamental concepts. One is
biological or biochemical determinism and the other is the mind/body dichotomy.
The deterministic model views human beings as machines that are governed
by biological or biochemical forces. The most predominant biological force,
in this model, is genetics. In other words, we're just born that way. Examples
of biochemical forces are external agents that are passed from one person
to another, such as viruses, germs and bacteria. In this deterministic
model, people are seen as helpless victims of these forces, and play no
real part in their own health and healing. The only possible treatments
are pharmaceutical medication or surgery. In other words, just wind them
up; put in the right fuel, and away the machine goes.
Closely related to this is the mind/body dichotomy, which separates people
into two distinct parts, and treats these parts independently of each other.
One is the body, consisting of our physiological part, and the other is
the mind, consisting of our psychological or spiritual part, thoughts,
feelings, beliefs and spirit. Specialization then compounds this split
by dissecting the body into a myriad of other parts and pieces, and treating
them independently. Pretty soon nothing makes sense because you're no longer
dealing with whole people, just parts of them.
These deterministic views of people are consistent with the two cornerstones
of philosophy for all of Western Civilization for the last several hundred
years. These are Classical Newtonian Physics and Darwin's Theory of Evolution.
Newtonian Physics is materialistic. It views the universe as a huge machine,
consisting of separate units of matter, like billiard balls, which behave
according to strict laws of cause and effect. The Darwinian view of the
world also sees human beings and all life forms as subject to fixed biological
laws.
When Albert Einstein and the Quantum physicists who succeeded him came
along at the beginning of the 20th Century, their discoveries completely
turned the materialistic and deterministic views of the world upside down,
so much so that we still haven't adjusted. They discovered that the material
world we perceive with our five senses is only one tiny aspect of a much
bigger picture. If anything, it was nothing more than a convenient description
of the real world that we use to facilitate living our everyday lives.
When they delved into the subatomic world, they discovered that matter
didn't even exist as separate material entities, as we perceive, but rather
as traces or bundles of energy, which are in a state of continuous vibration
and lightening fast movement. This was a world that did not obey the laws
of cause of effect. This new world was a dynamic web of energy that could
only be studied and understood in terms of relationships and patterns.
Every aspect of it was connected to every other. They also discovered that
they, the observers, played a primary part in the creation of this world,
as the behavior of these energy traces varied according to how they observed
it.
They were also in complete agreement that this new world appeared to be
governed by an unseen intelligence of some kind. It could not possibly
be the result of random chance. The closer they looked, the more it appeared
to be the work of some great cosmic mind. In the famous words of physicist,
Sir James Jeans, "The world begins to look more like a great thought
than a great machine."
At first glance, this may appear to be a purely subjective or spiritual
perspective. In fact, it has a strong scientific basis. For example, DNA,
the molecule that is the fundamental building block of all organic life,
is highly intelligent. If it wasn't, it wouldn't know how to build the
structures it does according specific blueprints or plans.
This new view of the world is at the core of the paradigm shift that is
currently rocking the world of established medicine, and the rest of the
world as well. It is also precisely what mystics, sages and spiritual teachers
from virtually every culture on Earth have been telling us for thousands
of years. A truly unique feature of our times is the fact that the lines
between science and spirituality are disappearing.
The Quantum world gives us two basic concepts that apply most significantly
to the new paradigm in health. The first is that the entire universe, or
the Quantum field, consists of two basic things: energy and intelligence.
The second is the concept of connection. And all this can be summed up
in one sentence: The universe is a dynamic web of pulsating energy, governed
by an unseen intelligence, where everything is connected to everything
else. Human beings are a part of this grand design. We are far grander
than biochemical machines. We are vibratory energy, governed by intelligence,
with a connection to the Quantum energy field.
Nature, over billions of years of evolution, has devised perfect blueprints
for healthy, organic life forms, whether we're talking about human beings,
amoebas, or oak trees. The energy of healthy life forms vibrates at a certain
frequency. We call this energy state vitality or the spark of life. Quantum
health, then, means to resonate at this frequency.
Virtually all the disease in the civilized world can be understood in terms
of humanity, in its current wretched state, having lost this connection.
One of the best ways to illustrate this is with wild animals, for which
there is no cancer, heart disease or mental illness. A squirrel, for example,
knows exactly what to do to be in a state of Quantum health, simply by
following the blueprint of its instincts. This is the connection humans
have lost. It is a connection with the rhythm and flow of life.
Connection also means connecting the whole person - mind, body and spirit.
Mind/body dichotomy must be replaced with mind/body unity. The mind, the
body and the spirit are a functional unit, working in harmony. They are
all essential parts of the whole person. When any of these parts are separated
from the whole, none of them make sense anymore. The functioning of muscles,
nerves, cells and hormones is connected to our thoughts, feelings, beliefs
and spirit.
The mind, simply defined, is our thoughts and beliefs, and there is a profound
relationship between what goes on in our mind and the biochemistry of our
body. Our beliefs have awesome power in creating our world, and this includes
our physical body. A healthy belief system is one where we see ourselves
as an empowered force in a magnificent and mysterious world. An unhealthy
belief system is one where we see ourselves as powerless - helpless victims
of forces beyond our control. Placebos, where a person's belief in a certain
biochemical outcome is the primary factor in creating that outcome, are
an irrefutable example of the power of beliefs in creating our reality.
Our attitude or our feelings are another essential aspect of our whole
person, and again are closely linked to the biochemistry of our body. Here,
the key to Quantum health is experiencing life with feelings of peacefulness,
joy, acceptance and trust. In spite of what established medicine would
like us to think, we do have the capability to control our feelings. If
we don't know how to do this, we can learn. The simple act of relaxation
illustrates this beautifully. Relaxation has a direct effect upon on the
critically important family of hormones secreted by our adrenal system.
Healthy levels of these adrenal hormones have a powerful effect upon the
strength of our immune system, and the overall health of our bodies. If
we don't know how to relax, we can learn from techniques such as meditation
and yoga.
Human beings are far grander than biochemical machines. And the cause of
disease isn't the fuel that runs the machine. The problem always comes
back to the same thing: us. We all have the capability to create Quantum
health by reconnecting with the rhythm and flow of life. Our primary tool
to do this is our totality as whole people - mind, body and spirit - thoughts,
feelings and actions. And if this needs to be fixed, we must take the responsibility
to learn how. |
